Albany police searching for animal cruelty suspect

ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany Police Department (APD) addressed a disturbing crime that took place in east Albany late last week. One in which people found a dog who had been shot and killed.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley elaborated on the investigation Monday morning.

Saying the dog was unfortunately found hours after it had been dumped off on the side of the road, dead from a gunshot wound in the head.

“We understand there are people who do love animals and value all animals. But, when an animal is subjected to any kind of inhumane treatment, we need to make sure we find those who did this act and are held accountable…” said Chief Michael Persley, Albany Police Department (APD).

As of right now, the Albany Police do not have a person of interest and are currently looking for a suspect, who was seen driving a blue Chevy Avalanche.

Chief Persley says the dog’s body had been there for some time before police were called to the intersection.

“People had said they had seen the dog out there early. When we got the call is when we responded out. The dog had been there a couple of days. It’s just that someone noticed and stopped to see what it was. But, when we went back and interviewed someone else, they did see a blue Chevy Avalanche that possibly had the dog in it,” said Chief Persley.

Animal cruelty in the state of Georgia currently carries a punishment of one to five years in prison…

And… Chief Persley tells us that they may find more charges in the investigation…

“Depending on what other things you may be doing; the sentencing behind it, it’s different. All cases are treated differently. But, it is a felony here in the state of Georgia, depending on the severity of injuries or inhumane treatment dine to the animal,” said Chief Persley.

While leads on a suspect are still few and far between, Chief Persley wants anyone who might have any additional information to call the Albany Police Department (APD).

If you have any information, you can contact Albany Crime Stoppers at 229-436-8477.
