Deandra Ama 9th Essay Contest Pkg Frame At 1m0s“The “A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words” essay contest is a yearly contest that we have. This is the 9th annual one that we are doing. And, the idea is to have students come visit the museum and see six works in person and decide between them to pick one that speaks to them the most that they would like to write about. And, then they are tasked with writing an essay, a poem, a visual analysis, anything that they like that is a thousand words or less. We really want to focus on our southwest Georgia community and bring them into our space. This is open to any college student or high school student that can get to the museum. So, if they can get here and they can look at the artwork, it is open for them, and it’s also open for middle school students to give it a try. They do not want cash prizes in middle school, but hopefully it will encourage them to continue writing in high school,” said Annie Vanoteghem, Director of Education & Public Planning, Albany Museum of Art (AMA).

The total prize pool for the competition stands at $1,000. The first-place writer in each division secures a $250 award, with $150 for second-place, and $100 for third-place. Winners will be revealed during the awards reception at 6 p.m. On Thursday, March 7th, hosted at the museum.

Annie Vanoteghem, Director of Education & Public Planning, provides insight into the essay submission period and details the selection process for determining the winners.

“The submission period starts on February 1st and they are due by February 29th at midnight eastern standard time. These essays can be sent to an email provided. And, then they will be blindly judged. So, will assign each essay a number and send them off to our diverse group of judges and they’ll send them back. And then on March 7th, we’ll have our awards reception here at the AMA,” said Vanoteghem.
