Albany mourns loss of Ward 6 Commissioner Young
ALBANY, Ga. – Over the weekend, Ward 6 Commissioner Demetrius Young passed away at 53-year-old.
Born and raised in Albany, Commissioner Young was a product of local schools, including Monroe High School, Albany Tech, and Albany State University. He followed in his mother’s footsteps, dedicating his life to serving his hometown and honoring his family’s deep-rooted legacy in the community.
“Demetrius was a native of Albany. He was born into a family, which has historically been very politically active. His mother was actually one of the first African American commissioners for the city of Albany. She was involved in a lawsuit prior to her election, the city of Albany had at-large elections. In other words, all citizens of Albany were allowed to vote for each of the six. Wards, and following the successful lawsuit, only individuals living in the respective wards were allowed to vote for their commissioner, and as a result, the first two African American city commissioners were elected, I think in 1976 and following her term on the Albany city commission, Demetrius’ mother, served in the Georgia House of Representatives for quite some time,” said Mayor Bo Dorough, City of Albany.
He was also a devoted father to four daughters, Jamiya, Nubia, Kenya and Ericka.
Commissioner Young often expressed that his main goal was to ensure a high quality of life in the Good Life City.
He strived to be not only a positive political figure, but also a strong and supportive presence in the Albany community.
“Well of course, Commissioner Young was reelected without opposition in 2023. Had he not passed at such a young age, he probably would have had a very lengthy career in local and maybe even state politics. And it is very unfortunate that we have lost a public servant and suddenly, we are at a loss because it was so unexpected,” said Mayor Dorough.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 4th at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his friends and family.
