Albany Humane Society on protecting your pets during holidays
ALBANY, Ga. – The holidays are a certainly a fun time, but it can also be difficult to navigate if you have pets.
That’s why we caught up with the Albany Humane Society about what you should and shouldn’t feed your pets this holiday season.
“Some foods that would be unsafe for your pets during the holidays would be things like gravy, onions, garlic, anything that has grapes or raisins in it. And, then, also things like bones. Bones aren’t necessarily toxic to your animals, but if they do ingest them, they can splinter and then pieces can actually get stuck in their esophagus…” said Payton Jarrell, Director, Albany Humane Society.
Instead, there are a few things you can give your pets if you don’t want them to feel left out on the festivities.
“And… foods that would be great for them are things like blueberries, sweet potatoes, carrots or pumpkin. If it’s straight pumpkin, it’s actually really good for their digestive system…” said Jarrell.
And, it isn’t just what’s on your table you need to keep an eye out for either. As even Christmas decorations like ornaments can pose a hazard too.
“The ornaments could be made out of glass. It could rip their intestines. The metal hangers could also do that or get stuck in their throat. So, you just have to be very careful how you decorate this holiday season as well,” said Jarrell.
It isn’t just ornaments either, as there are certain holiday plants that can pose a problem if your pet takes it for a snack.
“One of your biggest holiday plants or the most popular would be things like poinsettias mistletoe, yew, lilies, anything like that is actually toxic to your pets,” said Jarrell.
So, while you celebrate the holidays, make sure to keep an eye on your pets so they can enjoy the season with you as well.
