Albany Humane Society Independence Day pet safety tips

ALBANY, Ga. – As Independence Day celebrations reach their peak through the weekend, it isn’t a fun time for most of our four legged friends. So, we spoke with the humane society about making sure they don’t get spooked.

Humane Society director, Payton Jarrell sat down with us earlier in the week to talk about helping your pets as the fireworks start going off.

“A lot of these animals get stressed out. They get anxiety, they’re not used to hearing loud, scary noises like this. The most important thing I recommend is bringing them inside, and into a place where they feel safe and calm,” said Payton Jarrell, Director, Albany Humane Society.

Jarrell also says there are a few other means to help keep your dog calm so they don’t get frightened by the fireworks, even inside.

“…Doing things like playing music or the TV a little louder than normal to kind of cover the sound of the fireworks works great as well. And, one of the most important things is getting them out before the fireworks start, you know, tire them out…” said Jarrell.

Unfortunately, there are some instances in which dogs end up getting out from being spooked by fireworks.

In those circumstances, the best thing you can do is call around.

“…And of course check in with your local shelters. Not only your local shelters, but in the surrounding counties as well,” said Jarrell.

And, one of the best things you can do is make sure that your pet has been microchipped in the unfortunate event they have gotten out.

“Not only are they microchipped, but make sure that the information on your microchip is up-to-date. So, if you have recently changed phone numbers, or moved, or got your pet from someone and you’ve switched ownership; things like that need to be updated that way if your pet does come in, the vet or shelter has a way to contact you…” said Jarrell.

While this is unfortunately one of the worst times of the year for dogs to get out, the humane society wants anyone whose pet does go missing to reach out wherever possible.

If you or someone you know has a missing pet, you’ll be able to call the Albany Humane Society at 229-888-7387 starting Friday.
