Albany Fire Dept. on thunderstorm preparedness tips
ALBANY, Ga. – With the spring season comes increased risk for storms as well as issues such as high winds and flooding.
That’s why we met with Assistant Fire Chief, James Brown to talk about being prepared for severe weather.
“One of the things you want to do is make sure that if you are in a storm, to make sure you try to get inside as soon as possible. And, if you are in a flooded area, as we say, “Turn around. Don’t drown.” Don’t try to drive through flood waters,” said James Brown, Assistant Fire Chief, Albany Fire Department.
And, Chief Brown gave us a few good pieces of advice to keep in mind as we see more severe weather over the next couple of months.
“You also want to prepare a disaster kit. A disaster kit will usually include food, dry food for three days, also a water supply. Also, consider a flashlight, medical supplies in there as well. Also, keep some cash on hand in that supply kit,” said Asst. Chief Brown.
And… it isn’t just spring thunderstorms that Asst. Chief Brown says people should start preparing for either. Cause while it may be a couple of months away, it’s not a bad idea to start prepping for hurricane season.
And… that starts by making sure you’re ready for a worst-case scenario.
“So, we want to be just careful and be mindful and keep all the safety tips in hand. As far as, like I said, having a disaster kit, having money on hand, checking your personal property, checking homeowner’s insurance, making sure that your vehicle is full of gas…” said Asst. Chief Brown.
While we expect to see more severe weather as we head into warmer months, the Albany Fire Department is urging people to take the time now to be prepared.
