Albany Fire Department discovers deceased person while battling Pine Bluff House Fire

ALBANY, Ga. – Albany Fire Fighters notified Dougherty County Police Officers after finding 74-year-old Roay Mathis inside his Pine Bluff residence deceased.

Dougherty County Police were dispatched to 520 Pine Bluff Road on Monday, October 30, 2023, shortly after 9 PM to assist the Albany Fire Department (AFD) with traffic control for a structure fire before Mathis was located.

The preliminary investigation indicated Mathis appeared to have died from the heat from the fire and smoke inhalation. There was no evidence of foul play, and according to AFD, the fire appeared to have started near the front door of the residence, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
