Albany Exchange Club, American Legion Post 30 hold American flag disposal event
ALBANY, Ga. – The Exchange Club of Albany partnered with the American Legion Post 30 to properly dispose of American flags. Flags that, unlike the ones behind me have seen better days.
American Legion Commander and outgoing Exchange Club President, Lieutenant, Dan Brewer…told us about the need to properly dispose of flags…
Especially since it’s something most people might not really know how to go about it.
“It’s either that people don’t know, it could be some cases that they don’t care, I don’t know. But, we try to educate so that people can do it right. We have a flag disposal box at the legion…” said Lt. Dan Brewer, Commander, American Legion Post 30.
And, this is the first time the Exchange Club has been able to hold such an event and allow people to give their flags a proper disposal.
“The patriotism and Americanism piece is huge for our club. We try to honor veterans, we want to show respect and honor to first responders. So, this program and this ceremony today fits right in with our national programs of service, and we’re honored to do that…” said Steve Parrine, Immediate Past President, Exchange Club of Albany.
Dozens of flags were handed out to members of the Exchange Club as they gave these flags a proper sendoff.
And, members of the Exchange Club were shown why it’s important to fold these flags into that familiar triangle.
“To have the interest in people wanting to display their patriotism and their care and love of the country means a lot to me and any veteran. So, it’s important,” said Lt. Brewer.
“Proper disposal of the American flag; I view it similarly to displaying the American flag. It’s a sign of respect, it’s a sign of patriotism, and it honors our country,” said Parrine.
“It shows respect. It shows absolute respect for the flag and for every man, and every one who fought for the flag. It is the emblem of this country, and that’s important,” said Trish Davis, American Legion Auxilary.
As the Exchange Club and the American Legion were able to give these flags a proper sendoff, they want everyone to know there are places where they can safely and properly discard their flags.
If you are interested in properly disposing of your flags, there are disposal bins at the American Legion Post 30 at 2916 Gillionville Road in Albany, or at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds.
