Albany-Dougherty Homeless Coalition hosts event for those in need

ALBANY, Ga. – 59% of Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless.

That’s why it’s necessary to help your community.

And… here at the Albany Civic Center, that’s what they did with the “Stand Up for Our Homeless” event.

This is the 10th annual event for Albany-Dougherty Homeless Coalition.

Attendees walked away with bags filled with essentials…

From clothing and food to health supplies, ensuring everyone left with what they needed.

“This is one of the largest events that happens in our community for Albany’s homeless population. We basically call it almost a nonstop shop where they’re able to come in and help have health needs met. Everything from checking the blood pressure, HIV screenings, flu shots, COVID vaccines, any of those types of things they need to clothing to hot lunch haircuts. And then there are people here to provide housing assistance. It’s a wealth of opportunities for those who find themselves in the homelessness,” said David Blackwell, Chair, Albany-Dougherty Homeless Coalition.

After speaking with some of those experiencing homelessness, it’s clear this event is vital for their health and well-being.

One attendee shared that this is the only haircut they receive all year.

The event brought together 40-50 businesses and community partners to distribute essential items.

Another remarkable aspect was its inclusivity… Helping not just the homeless, but also those with homes who are struggling to make ends meet.

“I think all of us recognize how blessed we are. And, there are so many. That are one paycheck away from being here. We’re not only here to serve the homeless, but we recognize that our community has a lot of working poor and we do not turn them away. We want them to come in, and secure resources as well,” said Blackwell.

This event happens just once a year, but the Albany-Dougherty Homeless Coalition is always seeking support year-round.
