Albany Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee holds Salty Sandbagger Golf Tournament
ALBANY, Ga. – Earlier today, the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee held the Salty Sandbagger Golf Tournament.
This exciting event brought together Albany’s Marines and local businesses for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie.
The Salty Sandbagger Golf Tournament was established in 1976 and has taken place twice a year since then.
This year, participants competed to see who would claim the coveted trophy after the last tournament’s victory went to the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany.
“Well, what folks need to understand, like Dan was saying, is we are a military community. You have the Marine Corps Logistics Base, which houses the Marine Corps Logistics Command, that is the logistics hub for the entire Marine Corps. A lot of people don’t realize that in addition to those Marines, we have over 3000 civilians that work at that base. So, the military and the community is not two separate things. It is one thing. It is one in the same. One team, one fight, one Albany,” Don Gray, Co-Chairman of Military Affairs for ACOC.
“There’s a sense of competition, good natured competition that’s been going on since 1976. Where we have the Salty Sandbag Tournament trophy. That’s pretty much a prized possession of whoever wins this tournament. And, it goes back and forth between the base commander’s office or the Chamber of Commerce in Albany. And, I think that’s an amazing concept that helps promote a sense of being in this community,” said Dan Gillan, Chairman of Military Affairs for ACOC.
