Adel Public Works fills sandbags before Helene

ADEL, Ga. – As southwest Georgia prepares for the impact from Hurricane Helene, cook county is preparing for the worst as Adel Public Works gives out sandbags.

Cook county resident, Arthur Paige is filling up 10 sandbags Wednesday afternoon, preparing for any possible flooding coming his way.

“I’m glad they’re offering them. It’s a lot of help for a lot of people,” said Arthur Paige, Cook county resident.

That’s why through Thursday, Adel Public Works is allowing people to come to the 400 block of North Poplar Street and fill sandbags for their property.

“We’ve got plenty of sand we’re actually going to move it up under the shelter. Rains’ coming later, probably this afternoon. We don’t want it to get wet. And, our gates, they posted on the Facebook page that the gates will stay open until 7:00, but I’ll leave the gates open as needed tonight and tomorrow,” said T. J. Tucker, Operations Mgr., Adel Public Works Dept.

We also reached out to the city of Adel’s electrical superintendent, Jeff Baker who in a written statement tells us…

“We have plenty of extra electric poles and have been preparing all week for the hurricane. We also will have two more crews coming in to assist us this week if needed.”

Back at public works, tucker is imploring everyone concerned about flooding in cook county to get their sandbags.

“Go ahead and make preparations today with the sandbags, different things, anything that you need. We’re picking up some stuff to keep it from getting it blown around. I’ve got some extra sway car trailers that we’re trying to get on the yard and out of here. We’ll have access to them on a as needed basis too through this,” said Tucker.

While the sandbags will be given out Thursday, Tucker is encouraging the Cook county community not to wait as the storm approaches.

And… the City of Adel has issued a shelter-in-place order beginning at 9 p.m. this evening.
