ABAC’s Student Government Association hosts 9/11 Remembrance Service
TIFTON, Ga. – At the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) campus, veterans are sharing where they were on 9/11 with the next generation of students.
Going over the times the morning of September 11th, 2001 was just a small part of Wednesday’s Remembrance Ceremony…
As ABAC partnered with American Legion Post 515 from Coffee county for the program.
“And… I just think it’s really important that we take the time to remember what transpired in our country 23 years ago.” said Dr. Tracy Brundage, President, ABAC.
We caught up with the former Post Commander, Jerome Loving and current Commander, Debra Woods after the ceremony.
They spoke with us about why they needed to put this on today.
“In Douglas and Coffee county. We are on the go all the time. In a time of community call, we go and do what we can to make sure that we never forget. In Coffee county all of the schools got the same video & PowerPoint that they’re showing the kids today. So, it’s not a ‘why do we want to?’ We are obligated to do it,” said Jerome Loving, Fmr. Commander, American Legion Post 515.
And… two also shared where they were on that day in 2001.
“The tragedy of that morning when I woke up in California and saw it on the news; we have to make sure that we never forget this, what happened on 9/11,” said Debra Woods, Commander, American Legion Post 515.
“And… additionally, I was a civilian, the chief of the Military’s Support Division in Atlanta. First of all, when this happened and we had responders that went and responded to this. So, I saw the events unfold for months on end. And, the images stick with me,” said Loving.
And… the ceremony helps preserve the memory of the day of the attack.
“And… it’s through those stories, the stories that we tell that will keep that history alive through these generations of young people that weren’t alive, weren’t here when these events transpired in our country,” said Dr. Brundage.
Post 515’s leadership wants to keep the program going for future generations this way students can never forget.
The ceremony is put on by ABAC’s Student Government Association in partnership with the Coffee county American Legion.
