Watermelon season starts
(DAWSON, GA) – With the start of the Summer season only days away, farmers across Georgia are getting ready for the start of watermelon season.
The farmers have spent the last few days harvesting watermelons planted back in mid-March.
Mark Daniel, who runs Mark’s Melon Patch in Dawson, says this year’s weather has been in their favor to produce a sweeter crop, thanks to the cool, wet Spring.
The watermelon season also gives people a chance to get back out and support a local business.
Mark tells us, “I just think that everyone’s been cooped up inside all these months. Come out here and get yourself a nice watermelon, sit out here, cut it open and have a great time out here. I just encourage everyone to come on out.”
Daniel says the peak of watermelon season is set to be a week ahead of schedule this year, at the end of June.
