Criminal trespass/attempted burglary leads to a shooting in the 1500 block of Dawson Road

(Albany, GA) On January 28, 2026, at around 2:30 a.m., officers responded to a reported shooting at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Dawson Road.

Upon arrival, officers determined that Tommy Poole (36) had sustained multiple gunshot wounds during an incident that initially began as a criminal trespass/attempted burglary.

The investigation revealed that Poole forcibly entered the victim’s apartment without permission while the victim was asleep. Poole gained entry by breaking the glass of a rear bedroom window, which alerted the victim. The victim retrieved his firearm and went to investigate the noise.

The victim discovered Poole crawling on the floor inside the apartment and held him at gunpoint while attempting to contact police. During this encounter, Poole reportedly made attempts to reach for the victim’s firearm, at which point the victim fired multiple rounds, striking Poole.

While working the scene, officers learned that Poole had also shattered the window of another apartment within the complex and damaged the door to that residence.

Poole was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

At this time, no charges will be filed against the victim, and the investigation remains ongoing. Poole is expected to face charges related to Burglary and Criminal Trespass.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.
