Fitzgerald January Open brings competitive chess tournament to downtown this weekend
FITZGERALD, Ga. – Chess players from across the region will gather in Fitzgerald this weekend for the Fitzgerald January Open, a fast-paced chess tournament happening Saturday, January 24, at The Depot, located at 116 North Johnston Street.
Onsite registration runs from 10 to 10:30 a.m., followed by four rounds of rapid play. The event uses a G/30 d5 format, giving competitors just enough time to think while keeping the action moving.
The entry fee is $20, and players must have a current U.S. Chess membership to participate. Prizes include an 80% payout based on the total number of entries.
Even if you’re not competing, organizers say the tournament is free and open to the public to watch, making it a great chance for chess fans to stop by and enjoy the strategy and skill on display.
