Healthy Sumter distributes 500 fresh produce boxes, just in time for the holidays

AMERICUS, Ga. – (Saturday, November 22, 2025) – A group of more than 5 local organizations, as well as numerous volunteers, joined forces once again to host a Fresh Produce Community Giveaway for the residents of Americus & Sumter County.

500 fresh produce bags were distributed. Each box contained a combination of collards, cabbage, onions, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, and carrots.

This event was made possible by donations from the following organizations: Citizens Banks of Americus, Calvary Episcopal Church; Phoebe Sumter & Flint River Fresh.  Travis Rush also made a donation as an individual.

A special kudos to Phoebe Sumter Patient & Family Advisory Council (PFAC) Marvin Harris (Pictures A5 & A7), as he made an 8-hour round trip from the Sumter County High football game in North Georgia to volunteer on less than 4 hours of sleep!

This event was part of the Healthy Sumter initiative to address Food Insecurity in Americus & Sumter County as well as neighboring counties. Other initiatives include eliminating Food Deserts by creating community gardens and teaching people how to create gardens at their own home.

Special thanks to Farmer Fredo of Flint River Fresh, Olivia Amos and Landris Biggs of the Food Mill, Commander Nelson Brown, Odell Bacon, Clifford Morgan, Marcel Baker, Marvin Harris, DJ Johnson, Barbara Jackson, Kim Clark, Ivy Nunn, Chance Elliott & Hank Head, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

A special thanks also to Jenn Palan and the volunteers from Koinonia Farm, Kat Mournighan Wade and a host of other volunteers for assembling and distributing the bags of produce and helping make the event a success.
