Woodchip fire contained in East Albany; no active threat, Georgia Forestry Commission says

EAST ALBANY, Ga. – An early morning suspected grass fire, later determined to be two acres of splash pine wood chips ignited a blaze, caused heavy smoke, and closed a section of road in East Albany has now been contained according to authorities.

Georgia Forestry Commission is installing sprinklers to keep the fire from spreading and under control. Because of the highly flammable nature of the material, the piles may continue to burn for a couple more days.

Heavy plumes of smoke were seen coming up from where authorities had closed off the road near Blaylock Street and Evelyn Avenue.

Albany Fire Department (AFD) and Georgia Forestry Commission firefighters responded to the scene to contain the fire.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the fire.
