Worth Co. Schools releases statement after ‘all clear’ given in bomb threat at Middle School on Tuesday

SYLVESTER, Ga. – A message from the Superintendent:

“Yesterday a written bomb threat was found at Worth County Middle School. Law enforcement was immediately notified, and the building was evacuated per our School Safety Plan, which is approved annually by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA). Law enforcement coordinated with school leadership and set a perimeter to keep all students safe.”

“Worth County Schools Nutrition Department provided meals for the 450 students who had not yet eaten.”

“Students were allowed to leave with parents at a designated pick-up location and the remaining students were shuttled via the Worth County Schools Transportation Department to the Elementary School to escape the heat.”

“The entire Middle School building was cleared (no explosives found) by explosive detecting canines from the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Department and Albany Police by 3pm.”

“Eventually all students returned safely home either via bus or parent. Amazingly, the last bus left just after 3:30pm, essentially the normal time for the final departure.”

“As we always do, we will analyze our processes and procedures for an event as such, and adapt in the best interest of our students and staff.”

“That said, I would like to personally thank our partners at the Sylvester Police Department, Worth County Sheriff’s Office, and our local Emergency Management Agency for their support, coordination, and direction. Additional thanks to the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Department and Albany Police for providing the explosive detecting dogs.”

“I also greatly appreciate the flexibility and understanding of parents and the community, I have had multiple parents reach out to me over the past 12 hours to thank me and the school system for how yesterday’s event was handled.”

“Lastly, each Worth County school, department, and employee who was directly involved in ensuring the safety and security of our students throughout this event is to be commended. Although we have procedures for events as such, you adapted and performed under pressure, and you need to know that as your Superintendent, I am both proud and grateful for your actions yesterday.”

Sincerely,
Nehemiah Cummings, Ed. S.
Worth County Schools Superintendent
