Oglethorpe Boulevard bridge closing in July for replacement

ALBANY, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Transportation will begin work on the Oglethorpe Boulevard bridge starting Monday, July 21, 2025. The bridge will be closed to all traffic. Please prepare for delays and detours. For more information, please check out the press release provided by GDOT.

What: The contractor replacing the US 82 BU/State Route 520 BU/Oglethorpe Boulevard bridge has notified Dougherty County and Georgia Department of Transportation that it will close the bridge in July. The bridge over the Flint River was built in 1953 and was designed based on vehicles that are not as heavy as those driven today. It has an unknown foundation that could be at risk for scour, which is erosion of soil and sediment caused by the flow of water that can undermine the foundation. The new bridge will improve pedestrian and cycling accessibility across the river with a sidewalk on the north side and a 12-foot shared use path on the south side. It will have four 12-foot lanes.

Where: The detour will be between South Front Street and College Drive. The state route designated detour is for commercial, freight and thru traffic. This non-local traffic will be directed to use US 82/US 19/SR 133/SR 3 and SR 91. It is anticipated that local traffic will use local streets (see maps).

When: Begins July 22, 2025. The contractor is permitted to close the bridge for 365 calendar days so it will reopen July 22, 2026.
