Andersonville National Historic Site is proud to commemorate Memorial Day with a series of events that are free and open to the public from Saturday, May 24, to Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Please note that there are a few updates to this year’s schedule, so we encourage you to read on for details.
The Memorial Day observance will begin on Saturday, May 24, with a solemn ceremony at Andersonville National Cemetery. The U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence band will perform starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by the formal program at 10:00 a.m. After the ceremony, hundreds of scouts and dedicated volunteers will place small American flags on over 20,000 veterans’ graves. This poignant display, enriched by the Avenue of Flags organized with the assistance of Rolling Thunder Chapter 3, creates a striking and patriotic atmosphere for all attendees. Park staff will be available beginning at 8:00 a.m. to register individual and group volunteers.
“Memorial Day is an important time to honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said Superintendent Gia Wagner. “It is our profound privilege to pay tribute to them, especially those resting here at Andersonville National Cemetery.”
Additionally, park staff are looking for volunteers to assist with cleanup efforts on Tuesday, May 27, which will include the careful removal of the flags placed for the event.
