GSW receives ‘all clear’, individual in custody after reports of possible gunman on campus, GBI investigating
AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has been given the ‘all clear’ after previously out of an abundance of caution being placed on locked down.
According to a post on the university’s Facebook page: “the safety concern reported earlier today has been fully resolved. The individual involved — a non-GSW student — has been apprehended off campus by law enforcement.”
“We are grateful to report that no injuries have been reported.”
“We extend our sincere thanks to GSW Public Safety and all partnering local and state law enforcement agencies for their swift and coordinated response in ensuring the safety of our campus community.”
“Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and commitment to following official guidance.”
There were initial reports of an alleged individual carrying a weapon in the Magnolia Courtyard area on the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) campus.
Americus Police Chief Mark Scott confirmed that Americus Police Department (APD) and GSW Police investigated and there was no active shooter, no shots fired, and no injuries reported on campus.
The suspect, not a GSW student, is in custody after being apprehended at the Circle K on South Lee Street in Americus, and faces unknown charges.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is handling this investigation.
