Camilla’s De Soto Trail Regional Head Librarian urges young writers to enter GPB’s 2025 PBS Kids Writers Contest

March 11, 2025
Matthew Crumley,

CAMILLA, Ga. – Even at a young age, students can achieve big things! Georgia students from Kindergarten through third grade have a chance to showcase their creativity in the 2025 PBS Kids Writers Contest.

Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) and PBS Kids have teamed up to present this exciting challenge.

Students in grades K-3 are invited to create their very own children’s book, which must include at least five illustrations or pictures.

The word count requirement varies by age, ranging from 50 to 350 words.

But, the best part? Any child in that age group can participate!

“Yeah. So, there’s two ways to do that. They can go, they can go to our Facebook page. We’re promoting it there. And, they can click the link where they will find all the entry forms. Or they can come by the library with a hard copy of an application. There are two sheets of paper. One with the rules of entry and one with there writing,” said Pate Council, Head Librarian, De Soto Trail Regional Library, Camilla.

If you’re not in Camilla, the easiest way to get your child involved is by entering online.

Opportunities like this don’t come around often for young students to express their creativity, something this contest is designed to encourage.

“Well, this is a way for them if they’ve ever wondered about writing or wondered about how books come about. It’s a great way for them to express themselves through story telling. And also through drawing or illustration. To see if that’s something they want to pursue, or just something fun to do on the side,” said Council.

The deadline to enter is April 30.

Winners will have their stories published online, giving them a chance to share their creativity with a wide audience.
