Flamingos ‘flock’ in Tifton to raise funds, awareness of child abuse prevention
TIFTON, Ga. – A Tifton group is spreading awareness for their cause on one lawn at a time.
CBS 44’s Brian Roche has more.
One Tift County group within Family Connection is making local homes go pink as they raise awareness for resources geared towards fighting child abuse.
The Tift County Council on Child Abuse (COCA) has started up their 10th annual fundraiser with the ‘Flamingo Flock’ showing up on people’s lawns.
“This event has been going on for over a decade. It is one of our most successful fundraisers thanks to our community participation. I have been amazed at the community interest and support,” said Roberto Hernandez, Treasurer, Tift Co. COCA.
While the goal is small at a modest one thousand dollars, the council on child abuse tries to make sure that money gets put to good use when it comes to resources.
“It’s great fundraiser for us, and we use that money to impact the community and to help out some of the community groups, to teach others about prevention of child abuse, all the different types of abuse, and just to work for good in the community,” said Jennifer Porter, Secretary, Tift Co. COCA.
And, the council has already had a good start to the flock.
“And, it’s just fun for everyone to get involved. So, it involves the community, they’re looking forward to the flock either being coming to the yard or being moved somewhere else, and then we get a donation from that. I’ve gotten two calls this week about our bird removal service, which is just really funny because they’re, you know, it’s just part of the fun,” said Terry Bennett, Tift Co. COCA.
While they continue to Paint the Town Pink, they’re looking to make a dent against child abuse.
