Charles Driskell Park Community Center celebrates grand opening with first community event

ALBANY, Ga. – Driskell Park celebrated its grand opening with a community cookout this week.

Named after Charles “Doc” Driskell, a pillar of the community, the park has undergone an $8 million dollar renovation to serve as a vibrant gathering space for residents.

The grand opening featured free food for all, as families and friends came together to enjoy the park’s first day in action.

“Definitely, grand opening up the brand new facility, here in the heartbeat of Albany, Georgia. We’ve got the community out. We’ve got the playground. We’ve got the state of the art football facility. As you can see behind me. We’ve got the basketball courts, and inside we’ve got the computer lab. We got fitness rooms. Just somewhere for the community to be able to come. It’s free for the community. All you gotta do is sign up,” said Clifford Johnson, Supervisor, Albany Recreation and Parks.

Just asking everybody to sign up for free. Membership is free, and you have the facilities that you want.

The park features a state-of-the-art facility for both kids and adults, along with a full football field, two basketball courts, and a brand-new playground with soft ground designed to keep kids safe if they fall.

It’s the perfect spot, providing both fun and safety for everyone in Dougherty County.

“Would definitely bring in resources where they’re needed. You have individuals that may not be able to get to certain parts of town that have the same amenities, and we brought those amenities right here to them. As you can see, we’ve got people everywhere. And, they’re enjoying it. And, we want people to know that this is their facility. This is their park. We just provided a safe haven for them to be able to come here, enjoy themselves and have somewhere to actually have fun outside of the home,” said Johnson.

Driskell Park is located at 1023 South McKinley Street in Albany.
