Black Ice dangers

ALBANY, Ga. – As cars are slowly getting back on the road here in South Georgia, you still have some cause for concern. As the snow melts, you might have a potential scare of Black Ice on the roads.

Black Ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice that forms on surfaces like roads and sidewalks, often blending in with the pavement and making it hard to spot. It’s incredibly slippery and can be very dangerous.

Even regular ice can be a hazard, as shown in this video of a main road in Albany.

To stay safe in these icy conditions, it’s important to drive much slower than the speed limit, especially at night when black ice is more likely to form. You should also avoid driving over bridges, as they freeze first due to the lack of ground underneath.

Remember to give yourself plenty of extra time to get where you’re going, as icy conditions may slow down your travel. Make sure to exercise extra caution on the roads, and if you don’t need to go out, it’s safer to stay home.
