Phoebe fresh produce boxes giveaway for MLK Day of Community Service

ALBANY, Ga. – Phoebe employees braved the low temperatures to give out fresh produce to those in need as part of their annual Martin Luther King Day of Community Service.

Phoebe Community Benefit Officer, Jennifer Williams says their partnership to give out hundreds of boxes of produce from Flint River Fresh fits Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work giving back to the public perfectly.

“Well, MLK was a man of service and a man of action. So, each year we organize some kind of event to support the community. And, this year we decided, as we did last year, to do a food produce giveaway,” said Dr. Jen Williams, Chief Diversity, Inclusion & Community Benefit Officer, Phoebe Health System.

They’re one of many groups giving back to their community in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life…

And… in giving out food to those who are struggling with food insecurity, it helps keep his legacy of lifting those up alive.

“Well, it helps carry on his legacy because one of his platforms was health care and everyone has a right to good quality health care. And, some people don’t have the nutrition that they need in order to maintain good health. So, giving back to the community in this way and a myriad other ways that we get back to the community through our volunteer program are one way to keep his legacy alive,” said Williams.

As they continue to tackle the food insecurity problem in Southwest Georgia, they’re reminded that this isn’t just a single day effort.

“It’s vital for today, but truly it’s vital every day. People need to eat today, but they need to eat tomorrow as well. So, we want to do what we can to give back to our community,” said Williams.

And… the employees of the Phoebe Health System, much like others spread another one of Dr. King’s messages, “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.”

The Phoebe Health System gave out over three hundred boxes of produce in just under two hours.
