Shiloh Baptist Church’s Dream Walk MLK Day celebration

ALBANY, Ga. – In Albany, the holiday was celebrated with a program and a Dream Walk at Shiloh Baptist Church. Participants reflected on Dr. King’s profound impact and shared what his vision means for America today.

“In fullness? MLK Day means a day of unity and collaboration from all communities. MLK represented the collaboration of all cultures coming together under one system, under one government. Not separate, but equal, but all equal. He stood for equality, rights, civil rights, as we know, and he was basically a man that brought peace. But, within that peace, he had to make some changes. With leaders, in the government and everything like that. But, he was truly a person who was dedicated to changing America as what we are today. And, I am thankful for all that he has done for Americans as myself, as an African American here. Because, without Dr. King, I wouldn’t be able to have the privileges, and said I am allowed to have today,” said Anquarius Brown Reed, resident.

On March 25, 1965, Dr. King led thousands of nonviolent demonstrators to the steps of the capitol in Montgomery, Alabama, following a 5-day march advocating for voting rights for African Americans.

Today, residents of Albany honor that historic moment with their own march, leading to a circle of prayer and words of encouragement to celebrate what Dr. King fought for.

“Yeah, it’s a wonderful way to bring our community together in solidarity, around freedom, around liberation, and around recognizing that we still have a legacy of work that we still must continue to do in this country. And, so, by bringing people together and reminding them of what’s at stake, what’s important in this country, this is a great opportunity for the community to just come together under the common solidarity of Dr. Martin Luther King,” said Sherrell Byrd, resident.

Dr. King’s dream continues to shape America, thanks to his leadership and the support of those who stood alongside him.
