Crisp Co. Sheriff’s Office donates bicycles to third grade students

CORDELE, Ga. – Is there a better time to give back than the holidays?

Crisp County Sheriff’s Office just gave out 18 bikes to students at Crisp County Primary School.

For the 11th year, the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office has continued its tradition of giving away bicycles to local third graders.

Last month, every third-grade student participated by writing an essay on bike safety. The student with the best essay in each class was rewarded with a brand-new bike.

“We started out by teaching a program in November on bicycle safety. And workbooks were introduced by Country Financial, Melody Godfrey, the West Frazier gave some donations to help with the bicycles. The hospital provided helmets. Their trauma centers are very interested in what we do at that bicycle safety program. Then, we go back and let the teachers read all the essays that are presented. And, once they choose one, then that’s who wins the bicycle today,” said Sheriff Billy Hancock, Crisp Co. Sheriff’s Office.

A total of 18 bikes were handed out today, made possible by generous sponsors.

The excitement was palpable as students eagerly awaited the announcement of the winners.

Classmates cheered enthusiastically for each recipient, creating unforgettable moments and lasting memories.

“When you drive up and you unload a bicycle and you hand it to some child, and they say, I’ve never had a bicycle before, and you know that you’re a part of that. During Christmas especially, it just means a lot. And, they get to see us in a different light. Maybe we’re, you know, we’re not the bad guy anymore. Maybe we’re the good guy, and that’s what we want to be. And, we couldn’t do it without all of our partners in the community that come and help us and give throughout the year to make this happen. This is our 11th year of giving bicycles. To third graders and Chris Penny both private and public schools,” said Sheriff Hancock.

Even more impressive, this project has kept the holiday spirit alive year after year.
