Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Day of Empowerment
ALBANY, Ga. – One special sorority organization is laying the groundwork to empower the next generation.
The Albany, Georgia, alumni chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority recently hosted a day of empowerment for their youth groups, bringing together participants of various ages for a series of creative activities and reflection sessions.
“So, today, what you see here is we have different youth groups. We have our Addy Girls who are part of the Addy Girl Book Club. We have Embodi, we have gems, and of course we have Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy,” said Lisa Grace, Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy Co-Chair & Delta Sigma Theta member.
The goal of the youth program is to cultivate confident, respectful young men and women who are prepared to actively contribute to society and achieve personal and professional success.
“Our Addy Girls are elementary babies. We would like to focus on our reading. Then, of course, with our middle school it is more about knowing yourself, working through life’s challenges, you know, we want to make sure that we’re there for our girls. So, self image is a big thing. So, we want to make sure we have a presence there with our middle school age girls,” said Grace.
Under the leadership of President Chiquita M. Green, First Vice President Yolanda Fields, and Second Vice President Carla Parker, the Albany chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority coordinates monthly activities with their youth groups.
To make a lasting impact on high school students, the chapter also has designated advisors within participating schools to provide consistent support and mentorship.
“I call it the Dream Board, the older students, the high school, the gems and Embodi are using their electronic devices. So, we understand that this is the 21st century. Of course, students are going forward using technology, that’s important, so we hone in on those skills. Our younger groups of students. So, we understand that we’re still kind of hands on tactile, which is great because we’re letting them brainstorm, and because we’re here to make sure that they have a positive outcome in whatever they decide to do,” said Grace.
Through these programs, the chapter remains committed to guiding the next generation in their personal development, helping them discover their potential and strive toward becoming the best versions of themselves.
“It’s very important that we have a presence here and that we make sure that we give back and reach back to help the next that is coming along, because as they’re growing and they’re undecided on what they want to do, they’re not sure of who they are and where they want to go. So, we like to be here to help guide and foster whatever that dream or that passion may be and so we do that through our prospective programs under our five point programmatic thrust,” said Grace.
