Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission relief efforts for Helene survivors
ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission (ADEDC) helped a remarkable relief initiative to support those affected by Hurricane Helene.
The initiative began just one week ago as a call-to-action for businesses and individuals to come together to help our neighbors impacted by the hurricane, and the response has been overwhelming.
The initiative would focus on delivering critical supplies to areas that were hit the hardest by the storm.
Surrounding business, as well as community members would provide two truckloads full of water, chips, paper towels and toilet paper to deliver to those still in need…
Showcasing the incredible spirit of giving that defines Albany and Dougherty county.
“Our community’s been hit with a few tragedies along the way, and in ’94, my house was flooded and my family and I wouldn’t have survived had people not contributed to us. And, then, 2017 and 2018, of course, our community had the wind and hurricane storms that were here. And, so, we know what it’s like to be hurt. And, we wanted to give back to the others that maybe in a little less fortunate situations. So, Concrete Enterprises donated a whole semi worth of goods to Second Harvest Food Bank down in Valdosta. And, then, we, in addition to that, had a whole second semi load that was full of different items too. We coordinated most of it with Second Harvest because they were handling it from a statewide distribution perspective. But, we also sent several items to some of the smaller communities like Alapaha, Lenox, and Homerville, and Hazlehurst,” said Jana Dyke, President, ADEDC.
The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission (ADEDC) would coordinate with Michael Smith, the CEO of Greater Valdosta United Way, and Janna Luke at Second Harvest of South Georgia, to ensure the distribution of a semi truck loaded with relief items were sent to Valdosta for distribution across southeast Georgia.
