Dougherty Co. Public Library’s Library Card Sign-Up Month Activities
ALBANY, Ga. – Dougherty County Public Library has a series of initiatives planned for Library Card Sign-Up Month.
One highlight is the “Passport to Pines”, an initiative designed to boost community involvement with the local library.
“You actually receive something that looks like a little passport kind of. And, you have a few different things that need to be marked off in order for you to win a prize. But, if you do a certain amount of the activities, you receive a sticker. And, if you do all the activities on the passport, you actually will receive a chance to be entered into a drawing for a kindle. These activities that are on the passport, they’re all library related. Just trying to get people to get into their library, see what all is there,” said Sarah Shelton, Senior Branch Manager of Northwest Library.
The library is also hosting an event aimed at encouraging children to incorporate reading into their daily routine.
“On September 30th, we will be having something called “Georgia Reads Day.” I’m sure you’ve probably heard of Malcolm Mitchell Before. He played football at UGA. He actually is an author as well. He writes children’s books and he’ll be reading to children. But it will be live streamed and that will start at 10:00 in the morning. So, we’re really excited about that,” said Shelton.
As a part of these initiatives, the Dougherty County Public Library is introducing “Food for Fines,” where community members can donate food items to reduce or clear their library fines.
“Let us help you kind of clean up those fans a little bit. That might be on your account. You can get a replacement card as well. Whenever you do that, but if you bring a can item, it has to be either green beans, corn or mixed vegetables, 14 ounces. For every can you bring, you will actually receive $2 off your fine,” said Shelton.
