Hurricane Helene’s aftermath in South Georgia

Tornadoes, fires, floods, and fatalities reported in South Georgia

ALBANY, Ga. – According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Helene hit Florida’s Big Bend as a category 4 storm late Thursday but would quickly weaken to a tropical storm early this morning.

Despite weakening, Helene still brought dangerous storm surge, strong winds, and heavy rains.

In south Georgia, multiple counties are dealing with widespread power outages from downed trees and power lines. Officials are urging residents to stay off the roads while damage assessments are underway.

And… in unfortunate news, one person died after a tree fell on a vehicle in Colquitt county, and another death was confirmed in Jeff Davis county.

In Wheeler county, two people were killed when a suspected tornado flipped a mobile home, according to Coroner Ted Mercer. The victims were found about 100 yards from their home…

EMA director Steve Adams says children were also involved, but were safely found nearby.

In Ocilla, a Circle K gas station caught fire during Helene last night. Fire dispatch reported no injuries, and no one was inside at the time.
