Albany-Dougherty EOC closes after Tropical Storm Debby
ALBANY, Ga. – Tropical Storm Debby made its way through southwest Georgia. And, we spoke with the Albany Fire Department about being prepared for the next storm as we reach the halfway point of hurricane season.
The city of Albany reactivated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Sunday afternoon in advance of Debby impacting portions of southwest Georgia.
While Albany and surrounding counties will not see much in the way of impact, it should serve as a reminder to be prepared for the rest of hurricane season.
“We’re almost about to get in to the peak of hurricane season. Always be prepared. We in these areas are prone to hurricanes, tropical storms. Just stay updated with the news and be aware of your surroundings,” said Rubin Jordan, Deputy Fire Chief, Albany Fire Dept.
One of the biggest issues on the minds of first responders as Debby makes its way through southwest Georgia is the concern for flooding over the next couple of months.
“They should always understand where they are and what typically floods when the creek rises and elevate important items, prepare an emergency kit, develop an evacuation plan, secure their property, inspect it and maintain sump pumps…” said Jordan.
Even with the storm not heavily impacting a sizeable portion of our area, Jordan says that now is the time to double check and make sure every plan is in place.
“What they can to inspect and repair whatever needs to be done, restock emergency supplies, review and update emergency plans. Review your home, walk around your home, look at your policy, see what you have, what you don’t have, and what you might need to add to your insurance policy,” said Jordan.
While Debby’s impact will vary across southwest Georgia, it’s certainly bot a bad time to prepare for the next storm as hurricane season rolls on.
As of Monday afternoon, Albany-Dougherty ‘s EOC closed as watches and warnings were canceled for the area.
