Lee Co. Animal Shelter brings awareness to National Pet Adoption Week
LEESBURG, Ga. – It is National Pet Adoption Week, a dedicated time to bring attention to the thousands of pets in shelters awaiting their forever home.
This week emphasizes the importance of pet adoption and its profound impact on animals’ lives.
Many pet owners part with their furry friends due to time constraints, financial burdens, behavioral issues, and health concerns. Nevertheless, according to Forbes, approximately 4.1 million animals are adopted from shelters annually in the United States, with about 2 million dogs and 2.1 million cats finding new homes each year.
Dana Mathis, Lead Kennel Tech at the Lee County Animal Shelter, emphasizes the importance of giving shelter animals a second chance.
“Right now, the overpopulation of dogs and cats is tremendous and there are so many that need a home and you know, it’s a lot more reasonable to adopt than it is to go out and shop, because these babies, they realize that you have rescued them. They’re very compassionate and they’re thankful. And, right now, shelters are overcrowded, rescues are overcrowded. To me, it would just make more sense to adopt instead of shop” said Dana Mathis, Lead Kennel Tech, Lee County Animal Shelter.
Since 2011, the number of animals entering shelters has decreased. Furthermore, the annual number of euthanized dogs and cats has declined from 2.6 million in 2011 to around 920,000 per year, thanks to the efforts of families and organizations nationwide striving to bring that number close to zero.
Organizations such as Pet Smart, the Albany Humane Society, and the Lee County Animal Shelter work tirelessly to ensure that animals are not left on the streets and have the opportunity to find the perfect homes.
However, it is crucial to remember that pet ownership comes with responsibilities. Pets require your time, attention, and financial support for their care. While the joy of welcoming a new pet into your home is a wonderful experience, it is essential to be prepared for the commitment and duties involved in providing a loving and supportive home for a furry friend.
