COLUMBUS, Ga. – Take Your Best Shot! Extended Hours for Back-to-School Vaccines! Get ready for the new school year by updating your children’s vaccines now!

Yes! It’s almost time for school to begin! Are your child’s vaccines up to date?

“The first day of school always comes before we realize it,” said Colethia Moore, RN, BSN, and District Immunization Coordinator for the West Central District.

“We’ll be open late at several locations to help our working parents get your children’s vaccinations.”

The West Central District is hosting Take Your Best Shot! Back-to-School Immunization event Tuesday, July 23rd through Thursday, July 25th, and the Columbus, Crisp, Dooly, Harris and Sumter County health departments will be open until 6:00 pm to help get the job done! .

Here’s what’s required:

Pre-K and Kindergarten children, and any children new to Georgia schools, regardless of the grade they are entering, need nutrition, vision, hearing, and dental screenings.

Seventh graders are required to have a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and meningococcal vaccines.

Eleventh graders requirements include a meningococcal booster.

Other vaccines that are available and recommended for students are the HPV vaccine, and the meningitis B vaccine. Parents should talk to their healthcare provider for vaccines needed for their child. State forms required for enrollment are Form 3231, Immunization Certificate, and Form 3300, for Screenings for children new to Georgia schools.

The Columbus Health Department, and the Harris County Department in Hamilton, will also be open on Saturday, August 3rd, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm for vaccines and screenings. No appointments are necessary. Payment by cash, credit card or debit card will be collected at the time of service, and many insurance plans are accepted, including Medicaid and Peach Care.

Don’t wait until the last minute! Schools begin in most counties the first of August! All health departments are extremely busy at back-to-school time. Lines can get long and wait times longer!
