Emergency agencies prepare for Dorian’s landfall

LEESBURG, Ga. – All eyes are on Hurricane Dorian as it makes its way through the Caribbean on its march toward Florida.

Local agencies in South Georgia are putting their plans in place to be prepared when Dorian makes landfall.

With parts of southwest Georgia at risk, emergency agencies and power companies are keeping an eye on Dorian’s path.

“Right now, we’re monitoring the storm. We’re having national weather meetings twice a day,” Lee County Emergency Management Agency Director Coleman Williams said. “The EMA is constantly monitoring the weather, 24 hours a day, just to make sure that any impacts, we’re prepared for.”

The Red Cross of Southwest Georgia are also keeping a close watch on Dorian’s progress.

Volunteers may be needed across parts of Florida and South Georgia that could be impacted.

“The Red Cross of Georgia will, once we’re certain that Georgia won’t be affected by it, and we know the current path,” says Red Cross Executive Director, Adelaide Kirk. “Then the Red Cross of Georgia would certainly open its doors to move into the state of Florida as needed.”

The Red Cross will also be working on helping people evacuate, especially if there are holdovers from the holiday weekend.

Kirk Tells us, “”Specifically in Georgia, we are preparing ourselves to support in-state evacuations or within the state of Florida, as once the path of the storm has been moire defined and we have more certainty to it.”

Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp has already declared a State of Emergency for 12 counties along the Georgia coast.
