Hurt’s high hopes: Albany State softball star looking to excel in junior year
ALBANY, GA -Meet Madison Hurt: Albany State softball’s secret weapon.
But before she was a Lady Ram, she would learn at a young age that softball would be her life, even if she needed a little inspiration from her family.
“I started playing about six years old. My brother played baseball, and my brother is the only boy. He would have me out there playing with him, and then one day he ran in the house and was like ‘mom, she gotta play softball,’ and I never stopped after that.”
Growing up in Phenix City, Alabama, Hurt played travel ball when she was 12 up until her senior year at Central High School. But even though she traveled around Alabama, she would not leave the state until it was time to make a decision on where she would play for the next four years.
Enter: Albany State University.
“Being away from home I learned that life is short. Appreciate all the little things, all the little moments like you’re not gonna get them back. Yesterday I could’ve sworn I was a freshman cause time is flying by, so you got to take in every little moment.”
Since her Freshman year, Hurt has put some credibility to her name. She’s made the all-conference team, and was one of the first ever HBCU softball all-stars.
But while the awards have Hurt’s name on it, she always directs the recognition elsewhere.
“My travel ball coaches, my brother still, always working with my brother and my dad. My sister also plays softball so that’s a constant competition with siblings.”
But while her time in the blue and yellow is winding down, she has one final goal: impact.

“I wanna leave it better than I found it. Come in as a freshman but you know you grow through a program. Just kind of set a standard for the freshmen coming in… Just wanna leave the legacy of ‘these people came in, they work hard, they do what they have to do, they listen to what they’re told. Just … trying to put ASU softball on the map.”
Hurt and the Lady Rams look to go for their first conference championship since 2018 as they open the season Saturday against Southern Wesleyan University.
