They support us in making sure they’re always doing the best practices. We’re very honored. Our staff works very hard to make sure our patients are safe and our vision is to be recognized for quality and compassionate care and this just falls right into that,” said Melanie Owens, Vice President of Quality Assurance.

Lindy Sanderson, MSN, RN, CMSRN, Assistant Director of Quality Assurance, shares insight into the strategies employed to enhance patient safety.

“Our new American Education Center, I think, is a big testament to our dedication to improving or using technology to improve patient safety. We have four state-of-the-art sim labs that have mannequins that can do lots of really cool things, and we even have a big skills lab that our staff can go in, they can practice anything new. We also take a lot of ideas from other areas in our organization. A big example, specifically from this application award that we used was our staff nurse advisory council brought forth an idea that was kind of the driving force behind this improvement that we used for this project. So, we take those ideas and we determine if it will be better for our patients,” said Lindy Anderson, Assistant Director of Quality Assurance.

“We have a lot of involvement in our community. And, so, we are very accessible to our community and the surrounding areas so they know how to get in touch with us when they need something and we’re out there for them,” said Owens.

“We do start gathering feedback while patients are still in the hospital. That’s very important because you need to make those changes early, if there is a concern. And, we do that by using bedside leader rounding. We also use patient satisfaction surveys once our patients are discharged and that has pre-determined questions built in as well as an open comment section. So, patients are allowed to give their honest feedback so that we can make changes if we need to,” said Sanderson.
