CBS 44 Weather Authority Forecast: October 12, 2023
Cheyanne and I discuss the Annular Solar Eclipse and how it will be a partial one to SWGA plus Friday’s forecast…
Light rain or drizzle remains for the rest of today. Most areas received .75″ to 1″ of rainfall, but a few areas had between 2″-4″+ closer to the GA/FL line the past 24 hours. Valdosta, GA (VLD) set a new daily rainfall record today, October 12, 2023. 2.29″ shatters the old record of 0.60″ from 1994.
Overcast cloud deck, gusty easterly to northeasterly wind and a few light rain showers remains for Friday. Rain tapers off with mostly cloudy skies for Friday night football. A slight chance of rain showers returns as a cold front passes through Saturday afternoon. Drier & chilly for the Sunbelt Ag Expo Oct. 17-19 in Moultrie, GA with a gradual rebound in temperatures by end of the week.
The Annular Solar Eclipse will be a partial one for us with about 50%-60% coverage around 1:05 pm EDT, peaking around 1:16 pm EDT, but the “ring of fire” as the Moon moves across the center of the Sun will only happen in the path of annularity. It’s an annular eclipse, because while the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, it is at or near its farthest point from Earth. Therefore, during an annular eclipse it is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. This will be the first solar eclipse visible from SWGA since August 21, 2017. We did see a Total Lunar Eclipse on May 22, 2022 coinciding with the Flower Blood Moon.
