Phoebe Health System welcomes new addition to Neurology team

ALBANY, Ga. – The Phoebe Health System welcomed a new member of their neurology staff this week. We met with her Wednesday afternoon to talk about why she wanted to join Phoebe.

Dr. Dominique Mortel comes to south Georgia and Phoebe following an extensive list of fellowships and residencies.

“I lived a year in Zambia, I did a global health neurology program under Johns Hopkins. I’ve always been very passionate in working with the underserved, and I wanted to move to a low-middle income country and learn how to practice neurology in a limited resource setting,” Dr. Dominique Mortel, Neurologist, Phoebe Health System.

That desire to help underserved areas is what especially drew her to the Phoebe Health System, to help many in southwest Georgia who may have difficulty having their neurological needs met.

“When I came to Phoebe, I felt this was the patient demographic that I was most drawn to, especially after my work in Zambia, being that it is an underserved area. And, they had shared that with me on my interview day. I wanted to make sure that I worked in an underserved area and could give back to the community…” said Dr. Mortel.

And, Dr. Mortel says one of the areas she’s focusing on within the community to start with are strokes…

“One of the most prominent things you see on the inpatient and the outpatient side is stroke, and the risk of strokes. So, I have already been seeing that quite a bit, since starting here at Phoebe. So, it will be great to create stroke awareness in the community,” said Dr. Mortel.

Now that she’s here in southwest Georgia, she wants to make an impact in the neurological health of southwest Georgia, building on what previous Phoebe neurologists have done.

“…But I think community outreach will be a great starting point. And just getting the community more aware of what’s available to them, treatment, and also just access to care overall,” said Dr. Mortel.Brian Roche 8 9 23 Frame At 1m6s

As Dr. Mortel begins her work at Phoebe, she’s optimistic about improving the neurological health of southwest Georgia.

Dr. Mortel is a graduate of Ross University’s School of Medicine.
