Merry Acres Middle School teacher receives $10,000 ED Farm Learning Innovations classroom makeover
Ms. Fordham has some big plans for her students including a mini maker space where students can be as creative as they want.
ALBANY, Ga. – It was here at Merry Acres Middle School, where a beloved teacher would receive a special gift…
On Tuesday, July 25th, Sixth Grade Earth Science Teacher Chateireya Fordham received a $10,000 dollar classroom makeover giveaway on behalf of ED Farm Learning Innovations.
Mr. Daniel Whitt, ED Farm Learning Innovations Director says the chances of receiving the makeover grant are one in four hundred.
“So, every year, ED Farm, whose a non-profit focused on innovation and education out of Birmingham. We put on this summit every year for anyone who is related to ED Farm. We call it the future of learning summit. And, this year, just like last year, we held a raffle. So, it was about 1/400 chance that someone’s name would get drawn,” said Whitt.
“Dr. Michelle Sizemore, who is our point of contact, she won it. But, she doesn’t have a classroom. So, she so graciously opened it up to all of the ED Farm teacher fellows that are in this district and Ms. Fordham is the one who won,” said Whitt.
Ms. Fordham has some big plans for her students including a mini maker space where students can be as creative as they want.
“A mini maker space is just a place where the students can create different things they want to. I’m trying to incorporate a glow forge; a glow forge is a laser cutter and it can do different projects from building a robot or smaller projects like key chains and things of that nature. I also want to get a Cricut. The Cricut helps them with t-shirt designs, making posters, cups,” said Ms. Chateireya Fordham, Sixth Grade Earth Science Teacher, Merry Acres Middle School.
“I also want to bring back sewing to school, and I know that’s crazy but, I wanna bring in a sewing machine so they can learn that. 3D printers, so they have the opportunity to be able to work with that technology and I also want to get a computer, in which they can do video editing on,” said Fordham.
