Medical experts and public talk possibility of double masking
(ALBANY, GA) – As COVID-19 numbers continue to rise, national health experts and epidemiologists are starting to suggest the idea that people mask up twice when going out.
Phoebe Emergency Department Chairman, Dr James Black says that it could be easier to simply have one mask on effectively than doubling up
Dr. Black tells us, “Ostensibly, there’s a school of though that says ‘ the increased amount of coverage will decrease the amount of spread of the disease’…The answer we don’t know to the questions are how much does it increase effectiveness.”
While medical experts have mostly been in agreement on wearing a second mask, the public opinion is practically split down the middle.
“I feel like they’re trying to look out for our best interests. And if we’re dealing with an unknown, and they have an upper hand and suggest that, I don’t see why not follow that direction,” says Albany Resident Roosevelt Thomas.
While Arlington contractor, Christ Thornton says, “There are a number of people who are dying from this virus. There’s nothing more we can do by wearing additional face protection. I think it’s going to do more harm than good to be honest with you.”
Regardless on where you stand, dr black wants everyone to wear a mask properly when going outside.
“Wearing two masks incorrectly, is certainly not better than wearing one mask correctly. And by correctly, I mean covering the mouth and the nose and getting an appropriate seal around the mouth and the nose,” says Dr. Black.
The Phoebe Health System reported nearly 110 active COVIF patients at the main campus late last week.
