‘Hero is the title we bestow upon him today’; Crisp Co. Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of Deputy Tyee Browne

Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock says Browne's death was an 'act of evil'. Browne had only been part of the Crisp County Sheriff's Office since February of 2022. In that time, Browne became a beloved member of the brotherhood in blue.

CORDELE, Ga. – Today has been nothing but tragedy for the Crisp County community as one of their finest was killed early this morning.

And it has left Crisp County and law enforcement across Georgia in a state of mourning.

The sun rose on tragedy Wednesday morning as 26 year old Deputy Tyee Browne was killed in a shooting following a traffic stop.

Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock says Browne’s death was an ‘act of evil’.

“…Hero is the title we bestow upon him today. At 26 years old, this young man faced evil this morning in our community, protecting all those who were home and all those who slept. We extend our deepest sympathies to Deputy Browne’s friends, family and loved ones,” said Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock.

The alleged shooter in question is Croshawn Cross who was wanted on burglary charges prior to the shooting.

After a multi-county chase, he was finally stopped in on the line of Macon and Bibb county.

And throughout the afternoon, dozens of members the Crisp County community have come out to show their support for the fallen deputy…

Early Wednesday Afternoon, Browne’s body was brought to the funeral home in a procession of Sheriff’s deputies from nearby counties, the Georgia State Patrol, and the GBI.

“We are deeply in a grave state of grieving and mourning. And we are in a state of investigation with the GBI, whose come in to help investigate the case, and we just appreciate the thoughts and prayers of all the people who have come and sent their aid…” said District Attorney Brad Rigby, Crisp County.

“…And he told us, ‘I wanna be a deputy, I wanna be on the road.’… He had a great spirit. He loved this. As his mama told me today, ‘I know this was his second family,’ ” said Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock.

As of right now, the GBI is still conducting their own investigation into Deputy Browne’s tragic death, with more charges being possible for the alleged shooter.

The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office has not released details regarding Deputy Browne’s funeral arrangements at this time.
