Matthew Crumley,

TIFTON, Ga. – Community safety is a top priority for the City of Tifton, and the Tifton Police Department is constantly monitoring activity and increasing patrol in areas as needed. Recent incidents in Tifton have been heavily discussed on social media. The City and Tifton Police Department do not take any incident lightly. While social media is a powerful communication tool, the Tifton Police Department reminds residents to call 911 in the case of an emergency. The following are actions residents will continue to see in an effort to reduce criminal activity.

· Increase in patrol, especially during the night hours where crime is more prone to occur.

· Increase in patrol visibility at night in residential and commercial areas with the utilization of spot lights.

· Patrol parked in neighborhoods to deter criminal activity.

· Several recent crimes can be categorized as crimes of opportunity, and there are ways residents can assist in protecting themselves and decreasing the number of crimes.

· Be vigilant in locking car and other doors and securing valuable items.

· Never leave your vehicle unattended with the key in the ignition or vehicle running.

· Hide any weapons or firearms from public view and remove from vehicle overnight. As a reminder, keep a documented record of serial numbers on firearms.

· Ensure outdoor lights are on and trim back bushes and shrubs as this often inhabits areas where criminals can hide from officers.

The Tifton Police Department recently launched the TIP411 app that allows people to report suspicious activity through text or the app anonymously. Text “TIFTONPD” along with the message to 847411 or download the app at www.tifton.net. App users can also sign up to receive public safety alerts.
