Crisp Co. Schools offering summer lunch program

Feeding the kids...

CORDELE, Ga. – School may be out for summer, but that isn’t stopping the Crisp County School System from making sure their students are properly fed.

We caught up with local parent Jolie McDaniel, who was picking up lunch for her son, Garrison.

And, as a mother of two, she’s thankful to the school system for lending a hand.

“…It’s definitely a blessing for us. I stay at home with my two year old, so it definitely helps us out as far as income to be able to have that extra help during the summer time…” said Jolie McDaniel, parent.

During the week through mid-July, the Crisp County School System is offering up lunches for students under the age of eighteen.

They’re making sure that students are getting the quality food that they need.

“As you know, most parents are working during the summer, and our kids are home alone, so providing meals for them, it helps greatly. It’s a great deal to the community, parents, and our organization also to be providing these meals during the summer,” said JoAnn Doster, CCSS Nutrition Program Coordinator.

“It helps out with those families at work, and not able to fix food for their kids. And this right here as you can see is five to a box; five days of meals in a box that they can just simply open up, enjoy, fix, eat, and do whatever they need,” said Lateshia Bass, Crisp Co. Middle School, Paraprofessional.

The school system has been making their rounds throughout the county this week to hand out lunches…

But, more than anything, the school system is making sure that they’re assisting in the kids’ development outside of the classroom.

“Nutrition gets put on the backburner a lot. But if you think about it, the first thing they get when they get to school is a nutritious breakfast, which we advise all parents to do, is to tell their children to eat breakfast at school, because it’s very vital to their developmental stages of learning…” said JoAnn Doster, CCSS Nutrition Program Coordinator.

As the summer months roll on, the Crisp County School System is showing to the parents that they’re committed to making sure the kids lead a healthy life.

The Crisp County School System will be handing out lunches throughout the week until July 13th.
