Albany Churches Come Together for "Holy Week" Services
ALBANY, GA – With Easter Sunday approaching, local churches are gathering early to celebrate the holiday.
CBS 44’s Brian Roche shows us how a few churches have been coming together in Albany for what they call “holy week.”
Albany churchgoers are gathering in song ahead of both Easter Sunday and Good Friday as half a dozen churches come together for what they call “holy week.”
A tradition that’s been going strong for over 10 years…
“It’s not just getting together to have a good service. It’s really a sign of who Jesus was, and what he did. This unity that we have,” said Josh Bauer, Pastor, First Presbyterian Church of Albany.
After COVID-19 restrictions limited the number allowed in the church, today was far different…
With plenty of churchgoers packing the pews.
“It’s good to see this kind of turnout. To have this many people from all of the different churches. Some not even members of what we call the ‘downtown Albany churches’ coming out to celebrate holy week, and share in these services with us,” Rev. Ore Spregin, Pastor, Hines Memorial CME Church
“So we had to take like a lot of things did for COVID, and in the time that we’ve come back, it’s come back bigger than it ever has before, which is fantastic. This is something I hear about all year long. People say ‘we can’t wait until holy week, so we can be with these other churches,” said Pastor Bauer.
It’s not just the pastors who are excited about “holy week” here in Albany….we caught up with a couple of churchgoers after the sermon to get their thoughts on celebrating Easter Sunday a little early.
“To be able to come here, with my family, it must be a pretty big deal about Easter and stuff,” Jacob Kemp, Albany.
“I just think it’s showing and telling of the community and how much it means to people top come together as Christians and worship God,” said Blake Garrett, First Presbyterian Church of Albany member.
“We’ve been coming for decades as Miss Shirley said. For decades. And normally we’re in the choir, but we didn’t sing today. But, we come because we enjoy the fellowship as well,” said Ann Adams, Hines Memorial CME Church member.
As the downtown churches prepare for Easter Sunday, they’re expecting the chapel to be full, just in time for Good Friday.
The First Presbyterian Church of Albany will be holding “holy week” services tomorrow for Good Friday at Noon at 220 South Jackson Street in downtown Albany.
