Fire Department tests hydrants throughout the city of Douglas

DOUGLAS, GA – The City of Douglas, Georgia Fire Department is testing out fire hydrants this week to insure civilian safety.

“We have to go,” said a firefighter. “Come on Cameron, we have a fire,” said fire chief Casey Wright.

“ISO The Insurance Safety Organization requires that we test hydrants for our ISO rate and we’re a Class Two department. Therefore, we test hydrants, every hydrant has to be tested every four years,” said fire chief Wright.

Chief Casey Wright tells me that hydrant testing isn’t as easy as people might think.

“You have to have two crews to test one hydrant. The first crew will come through and open up the hydrant. Then, the second crew will come back behind them while they go down to the next hydrant line, and they’ll get residual pressure,” said fire chief Wright.

Chief Wright also tells me that hydrant testing allows firefighters to be more efficient.

“A very important piece of this is a lot of people don’t realize is it familiarizes our engineers and our firefighters with hydrant location. At 2:00 am on a call they’ll remember it’s a hydrant right here,” said fire chief Wright.

The Douglas City Fire Department’s hydrant testing is for the betterment of the community.

“It is for the safety of our community. It makes sure in the event of a fire we have proper water supply,” said fire chief Wright.

The City of Douglas, Georgia Fire Department will be testing hydrants all the way through March 31st.
