3 distemper cases confirmed in Quitman, pet owners urged to take action quickly

QUITMAN, Ga. – The City of Quitman has confirmed at least 3 cases of canine distemper.

The city is urging pet owners to take action quickly to protect their pets.

Distemper infection is highly contagious and the virus can spread quickly and be deadly to unvaccinated pets.

Symptoms include cough, lethargic, fever, discharge from eyes or nose, thickened or swollen paw pads and nose, vomiting and seizures.

Call your veterinarian right away if you observe unusual behavior and be sure to keep your pets away from wildlife and stray animals.

Call animal control instead of handling sick or strange-acting wildlife.

Double-check vaccine records.
