2nd Annual First Responders Health and Wellness Expo

ALBANY, Ga. – Albany State University’s Police Department is lending a hand to other members of law enforcement when it comes to mental health resources.

ASU Police Sergeant Calvin Hodge and Lieutenant Courtney Leverette met with us early Thursday afternoon to talk about their second annual resource fair for law enforcement…

“It’s the Health and Mental Health and Wellness Expo that we have for first responders. This is the second year that we’ve done this. Since the unfortunate passing of our former captain over patrol, Captain Brian Covington, it’s an event that we put together just to bring out our first responders all over the state,” said Sgt. Calvin Hodge, ASU Police.

In honor of their former captain, they wanted to create a way for officers to hear from people who would understand their situation the best.

“So, we also know that we’ve seen many things and you have a tendency to take things home with us, even though we don’t want to. So, we want to let people know like, ‘hey, these people here who are here for you’ to talk to about any and everything and they’ll understand where you’re coming from because they too are first responders,” said Lt. Courtney Leverette, ASU Police.

And, they gave us a rundown of the resources they have available.

“But, we want to get the word out like, ‘hey, we’re here.’ We have people here who are, you know, trained clinicians who can assist with day to day life of movement for any type of traumatic event that you’ve experienced,” said lt. Leverette.

But, Sergeant Hodge can’t stress enough to his fellow officers that it’s okay to reach out.

“Reach out. You know, we go through a lot of things in this career. We see a lot of bad things. So, we just want everybody to understand and realize that if you need someone to talk to, you need friends, doctors or anything like that, it’s just one big network,” said Sgt. Hodge.

And, while some members of law enforcement couldn’t make it, Albany State’s Police Department is encouraging them to reach out for help.
