2 killed, 6 injured, shooter taken into custody after shooting at Florida State University Main Campus near the Student Union in Tallahassee, FL

TALLAHASSEE, FL: In a late afternoon press conference, law enforcement officials confirmed that 2 were killed who were not FSU students and 6 injured in today’s shooting. 6 victims, 2 dead, 1 suspect.

The Tallahassee Police Department and Leon County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect as 20-year-old Phoenix Echner Eichner.

The suspect is the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy and a current FSU student who had access to her service weapon, a handgun and also had a shotgun found at the scene.

At around 11:50 a.m., there were reports of an active shooter situation on Florida State University (FSU)’s Main Campus near the Student Union.

Law enforcement has “neutralized” the threat and is working to clear the Tallahassee Main Campus after students and staff were asked to “shelter in place” while the main campus went on lockdown.

Multiple victims have been hospitalized at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (TMH) at this time.

Student reunification point is at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is on scene.

The following buildings are currently CLOSED as they are still an active crime scene: Student Union, Bellamy, HCB Classroom Building, Rovetta A&B, Moore Auditorium, Shaw, Pepper, Hecht House and Carraway. Individuals should not return to these buildings to retrieve personal property at this time. Individuals are free to move about other areas of campus. Individuals who may have witnessed anything of value should call 850-891-4987.

All classes, university events and business operations are canceled through Friday, April 18. Essential employees should check with their supervisors for further reporting instructions. Athletics events in Tallahassee are canceled throughout the weekend.

All classes and university events including athletics events scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2025, have been cancelled. Individuals not already on the main campus at this time should avoid coming to the Tallahassee main campus.
